How did Jesus do miracles?
Many today believe that Jesus’ miracles were done simply because He was the Son of God. However, that belief has no real Biblical foundation; as a matter of fact, the Bible tells us just the opposite. When Jesus had His ministry here on earth, He was living a man’s life. Let’s not forget, although he was 100% God, He was also 100% man as well. Jesus said Himself that the Son, by Himself, cannot do anything:
John 5:19, “Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”
So how did Jesus go about doing such mighty miracles? The Bible tells us that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. It was the Holy Spirit who equipped Jesus to do mighty miracles, signs and wonders!
Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”
I also think it was interesting that it was the Holy Spirit had anointed Jesus. Apparently, Jesus by Himself wasn’t enough – the Holy Spirit had to anoint Him to preach the gospel and do these mighty works! If we skip forward to Acts, we find that it was the Holy Spirit who gave Him power to go about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed of the devil:
Acts 10:38, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”
And here’s the awesome part: just as Jesus was anointed and sent forth, so also can we be anointed with the same Holy Spirit, and sent forth to do the same works that Jesus did! Consider these passages:
John 20:21, “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”
John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”
Mark 16:17, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils”
